Under SFPAs, partner countries shall be compensated for granting access to their fishing resources and financial assistance shall be provided to the partner countries for the implementation of a sustainable fisheries policy.

Sustainable fisheries partnership agreements with third countries should ensure that Union fishing activities in third country waters are based on the best available scientific advice and relevant information exchange, ensuring a sustainable exploitation of the marine biological resources, transparency as regards the determination of the surplus and, consequently, a management of the resources that is consistent with the objectives of the CFP.
2. A fim de assegurar a exploração sustentável dos excedentes de recursos biológicos marinhos, a União deve procurar garantir que os Acordos de Parceria no domínio da Pesca Sustentável com os países terceiros tragam benefícios mútuos para a União e o país terceiro em causa, nomeadamente para a sua população local e o seu setor das pescas, contribuam para a prossecução da atividade das frotas europeias e se destinem a obter uma quota-parte adequada dos excedentes disponíveis, consentânea com os interesses das frotas da União.
2. For the purpose of ensuring the sustainable exploitation of surpluses of marine biological resources, the Union shall endeavour to ensure that the Sustainable fisheries partnership agreements with third countries are of mutual benefit to the Union and to the third country concerned, including its local population and fishing industry and that they contribute to continuing the activity of Union fleets and seek to obtain an appropriate share of the available surplus, commensurate with the Union fleets' interest.
